Its no secret at this point the the Edmonton Oilers defensive core has taken a little bit of a beat down the past few months. As it stands, the Oilers have lost Philip Broberg, Vincent Desharnais, and Cody Ceci. All the above mentioned served key roles during the Oilers glorious Stanley Cup run last season.
With that being said, do the Oilers have a silver lining regarding newcomer Josh Brow? As per the hockey news, One player the Oilers signed this offseason completely breaks the mold: 6'5", 220-pound defenceman Josh Brown. Many were confused when the Oilers gave him three years at a million dollars per year this summer.
Although losing big 6'7 Vinny Desharnais is a huge blow to the Oilers penalty kill, 6'5 Josh Brown could be a suitable replacement.
If Paul Coffey was able to turn Vincent Desharnais into a shut-down playoff defender, maybe he will be able to do the same with Josh Brown. Although its unlikely Brown will duplicate Desharnais success, Paul Coffey has been known to be a miracle worker.
