It's no secret by now that the Oilers power-play is the most dynamic special teams unit the NHL has seen since the late 80's. During the 2022-23 season, the Oilers have scored an incredible 32.4 per cent of their power-play opportunities, making them the best PP in NHL history. That trend continued in 2023-24, and the Oilers will look to do the same this season.
Now, The Oilers have just announced that their newest additions, Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner, will have a massive part to play on the Oilers PP as they have now been promoted to the 2nd PP unit.
As per the Hockey News, Both forwards were spotted at practice playing on the Oilers' second unit. Meanwhile, Corey Perry, Darnell Nurse, and Mattias Ekholm took reps in their usual positions.
Having Skinner and Arvidsson on the second unit is a win-win scenario for the Oilers. It gives the unit four legitimate shooting threats and much experience on the man advantage.
It appears that the Oilers PP just got even deadlier. The Oilers second power play unit hasn't had much success over the years in comparison to the first unit. Nonetheless, having Arvidsson and Skinner on the second unit will make the Oilers PP virtually unstoppable this year.
