It's no secret that the Edmonton Oilers have taken a slight hit during the NHL offseason. With Cody Ceci leaving to the San Jose Sharks, including losing Philip Broberg to an offer sheet and Vincent Desharnais to free agency the Oilers have lost 3 of their top 7 defensemen.
These departures have left massive gaps in the Oilers defensive core, including concerns that young Ty Emberson might not be experienced enough to fill the shoes.
Devon Hladunewich from Oil on Whyte had an interesting take on the Oilers potential problem. If there is a long-term injury to either Darnell Nurse, Mattias Ekholm or Evan Bouchard the Oilers are in big trouble.
Devon Hladunewich suggests that if one of the Oilers top 3 defencemen were to be out longterm due to an injury, the Oilers might not have enough depth to cover their back-end.
Although the Oilers just signed Travis Dermott to a PTO, his position on the team remains uncertain. While I know injuries are part of the game and that they will happen, I just hope that there isn't anything serious that happens to the Oilers defense.
