Matthew Savoie has emerged as one of the top prospects on the Edmonton Oilers. Although he was never a "lock" to make the team, the expectations were still relatively high coming into training camp. Savoie didn't perform poorly by any means, but it's clear the young St. Albert native needs some time with the Condors to refine his game to the pro level.
As per the Hockey News, Savoie put up five points in six games with the Rochester Americans and 71 in 34 WHL games last season. He also played in his first NHL game with the Buffalo Sabres.
Acquired by the Oilers in a surprise July trade, Savoie is now the Oilers top prospect and will have lots of opportunity to refine his game in the AHL to start the season. He should immediately be slotted onto the teams top line and first powerplay unit.
Acquired in a blockbuster trade for Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio, the Oilers should feel extremely thankful to have an elite talent like Savoie in their system. Although he showed flashes of brilliance during the preseason, it's evident that with a little more time in the Oilers farm system, Savoie's confidence will only grow stronger.
