Travis Dermott is no stranger to the NHL. He found the bulk of his success playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2017-2022, but has bounced around the league since then. Dermott played with the Arizona Coyotes last season, but struggled to gain much traction, posting only 7 points through 50 games and was a -14 rating on the ice.
Despite struggling the past few seasons, Allan Mitchell believes that Dermott will likely be signed as a PTO and has a really good chance at cracking the Oilers roster. In addition, Kurt Leavins from the Edmonton journal backs up the comments from Mitchell, stating that Dermott may emerge as the top candidate for PTO considerations.
According to Liam McCormick from Oilers Daily, There's a handful of reasons Travis Dermott is the best candidate for the Oilers to sign to a tryout contract. He's got a history with Coach Knoblauch and Jeff Jackson, and it seems Dermott is more amenable to a PTO while Shattenkirk and Schultz would rather a contract.
The departure of Cody Ceci has left some gaps in the Oilers defensive core, and Dermott could pose as a cheap solution until the team pulls the trigger on a deadline trade in 2025.
