Evander Kane has been struggling through adversity the past few season. He's been plagued with injuries that have significantly hindered his offensive production on the ice. The main issue the 32-year-old sniper was dealing with was a sports hernia, which hampered him throughout the 2023-24 campaign, especially during the post season.
Oilers general manager Stan Bowman appeared on a segment of Bob Stauffer's Oilers Now radio show last week. Bowman reports that the Oilers are evaluating their options and an update should be issued soon. Insider Elliotte Friedman also reported on Kane's health status on his 32 Thoughts podcast.
According to Liam McCormick form Oilers Daily, the Oilers pressed tight against the salary cap this season, there was plenty of speculation that Evander Kane could be moved in a trade. That's clearly not the case anymore, as the Oilers are back under the salary cap to start the next year. If Kane is set to come back late in the year, the Oilers could borrow a strategy from the Vegas Golden Knights and ice a roster millions over the salary cap in the playoffs.
While Evander Kane undergoing surgery would be worse case scenario for the Oilers, the team will be in dire need of his services down the stretch. His absence from the team could potentially open up opportunities for younger Oiler prospects to fill the void moving forward.
