Earlier today, Kevin Woodley of In Puck Magazine unveiled that Edmonton Oilers' goaltending prospect, Eemil Vinni, underwent back surgery prior to the 2024 entry draft.

Despite the surgery, the Oilers' interim general manager Jeff Jackson and his drafting team believed in Vinni's potential, selecting him in the second round as the 64th overall pick.

Standing at six-foot-three and weighing 185 lbs, Vinni is recognized not only for his size but also for his distinctive playing style. Renowned for his aggressive approach, exceptional hockey IQ, and sharp hand-eye coordination, Vinni has captured the attention of many in the hockey world. Though he was not featured at the World Juniors, his performances for Finland's U-20 national team have been commendable, showcasing his capabilities and potential.

«Vinni's stats might not be special, but it's difficult being a starter in a pro league at 18. Vinni didn't get a start at the World Juniors, but he's arguably been Finland's best goaltender in the U-20 national team competition this year. At 6-foot-2, he has decent size and, fortunately, he isn't overcommitting on shots as much as he was a year ago. Vinni will need a lot of seasoning before becoming an NHLer, but I see potential there in how he commands himself in the crease. I think he's one of those guys we're going to see have a breakout season in Liiga before heading to the AHL and becoming an NHL backup.»

The Oilers' strategy appears focused on bolstering their goaltending roster, signaling a strong move towards enhancing their team depth. Vinni, with his promising attributes, is expected to join the Bakersfield team in the coming years, potentially elevating his play to meet NHL standards.

This drafting decision by the Oilers not only reflects their commitment to strengthening their goaltending department but also their willingness to invest in a player like Vinni, who, despite recent challenges, shows significant promise for future contributions to the team.
