Skinner broke the Oilers franchise record for wins by a rookie goaltender, surpassing the legendary goalie Grant Fuhr's record of 28 wins in the 1981-82 season. According to an article shared by the Edmonton Oilers' official Twitter account, "Most impressively, his 29 victories broke the Oilers franchise record for wins by a rookie goaltender, surpassing the 28 that future NHL Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr recorded back in 1981-82."
Under the guidance of Jay Woodcroft's system, Skinner showed glimpses of brilliance last season in his limited appearances. His hard work and dedication paid off, and he not only broke Grant Fuhr's record but also made an All-Star appearance this season, earning the admiration of his teammates.
"He's been unbelievable. You know, he's really stepped up throughout the whole year," said Connor McDavid. "I'm not sure where we'd be without him. I think it would be hard to find a rookie who's had a better year than Stu."
Although Skinner has a strong case for winning the Calder Trophy, which is given to the NHL's most outstanding rookie, the competition will be tough, with Matty Beniers also having an impressive season as the Seattle Kraken's 1st line Center. Beniers scored 24 goals, 33 assists, and 57 points in 80 games this season.
Skinner's ultimate goal, however, is to win the biggest prize of them all, the Stanley Cup. Although winning the Calder Trophy would be an excellent accomplishment, Skinner's focus remains on leading his team to a championship.
